Even with today’s high-speed Internet connections, web site page load speed still matters. Too many people ignore things like minimizing the file sizes to make sure things load as quickly as possible.
Well today I want to share one quick – super-easy – tip to minimize site download size and increate the page load speed. This one tip….?
Optimize Your Images
Optimizing your images is SUPER easy anymore. My favorite tool for optimizing images for the web right now is a site named Optimizilla. It’s free, fast, and easy. Upload an image file (literally drag it onto the page) and it will produce an optimized version for you to download and use.
How much difference can it make? Well, in my experience I’m seeing 70-75% reduction in image file size without noticeable change to the image quality. Here’s an example for you to see for yourself:
Can you notice a difference? I can’t and that smaller file is going to load WAY faster.
And it helps SEO
Besides the enhanced user experience, Google also likes sites that load quickly. With all else the same, a site that loads faster can rank higher in Google’s search results. That makes sense – Google wants a good user experience for the people who go to sites through their search engine.
So take the 2 minutes required to optimize an image before you upload it to your site. If you already have a bunch of non-optimized images on your site, I suggest you download the images, optimize them, and re-upload them to the site. The minimal amount of effort will definitely be worth it.
